There are analyses of the CMIP5 ensemble, new model runs, analyses of complementary observational data, attempts at reconciliation all the way to commentaries on how the topic has been covered in the media and on twitter. We will attempt to bring the highlights together here. As background, it is worth reading our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2013\/12\/the-global-temperature-jigsaw\/\" title=\"The global temperature jigsaw\">previous<\/a> discussions, along with pieces by <a href=\"http:\/\/simondonner.blogspot.de\/2013\/09\/the-pause-in-public-understanding-of.html\">Simon Donner<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/tamino.wordpress.com\/2014\/01\/30\/global-temperature-the-post-1998-surprise\/\">Tamino<\/a> to help put in context what is being discussed here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The papers and commentaries address multiple aspects of recent trends: the climate drivers over recent decades, the internal variability of the system, new analyses and model-observation comparisons &#8211; much as we suggested would be the case in any <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2013\/09\/on-mismatches-between-models-and-observations\/\" title=\"On mismatches between models and observations\">discussions of model-observations mismatches<\/a> last year. We will take each in turn:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Climate drivers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/images\/ngeo2105-f1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"\/images\/ngeo2105-f1.jpg\" width=45% align=\"right\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 445px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 445\/600;\" \/><\/a>Two papers (which I was an author on) are focussed mainly on examining the impact of updated forcings on the temperature: <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-0\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-0\">Santer et al (2014)<\/a><\/span> ($) looks in detail at the impact of small volcanoes post-2000 on the vertical structure of temperature changes, while the commentary by <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-1\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-1\">Schmidt et al (2014)<\/a><\/span> (OA, with registration) also updates the solar, aerosol and GHG forcing to estimate what the CMIP5 ensemble would have looked like if it had used this input data instead of the earlier estimates and initial forecasts (panel b in the figure). <\/p>\n<p><strong>Internal Variability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The contribution of internal variability to decadal trends is the focus of commentaries by <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-2\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-2\">Lisa Goddard<\/a><\/span> (OA) and <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-3\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-3\">Martin Visbeck<\/a><\/span> (OA). They focus on recent trends in ocean heat uptake, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the potential for initialised decadal predictions (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2010\/11\/so-how-did-that-global-cooling-bet-work-out\/\" title=\"So how did that global cooling bet work out?\">Keenlyside et al<\/a>) to capture these variations. These relate to both the earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2013\/12\/the-global-temperature-jigsaw\/\" title=\"The global temperature jigsaw\">Kosaka and Xie<\/a> and E<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2014\/02\/going-with-the-wind\/\" title=\"Going with the wind\">ngland et al<\/a> papers, but are mostly reviews.<br \/>\n[<strong>Update:<\/strong> See also the <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-4\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-4\">Clement and DeNezio<\/a><\/span> perspective in <em>Science<\/em>.]<\/p>\n<p><strong>New analyses<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/images\/nclimate2111-f1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/images\/\/nclimate2111-f1.jpg\" alt=\"Fyfe and Gillett (2014)\" width=\"40%\" align=\"right\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/a>Following on from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2013\/09\/what-ocean-heating-reveals-about-global-warming\/\" title=\"What ocean heating reveals about global warming\">Kosaka and Xie<\/a>, <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-5\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-5\">Fyfe and Gillett (2014)<\/a><\/span> ($) show that the trends in the Eastern Pacific (1993-2012) are well outside the spread in the CMIP5 ensemble (see figure on right). This is consistent with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2014\/02\/going-with-the-wind\/\" title=\"Going with the wind\">England et al<\/a> results, and yet it is unclear to what extent mis-specifications in the forcing might have affected it. For instance, if the updates to volcanic forcings from Vernier et al and used in the Santer and Schmidt papers are correct, trends from 1993 (at the maximum post-Pinatubo cooling) will be too large. <\/p>\n<p>As the <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-6\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-6\">Nature Geoscience<\/a><\/span> editorial emphasizes, there is more to climate change than the global mean temperature anomaly, and the paper by <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-7\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-7\">Seneviratne et al<\/a><\/span> ($) shows that trends in extreme temperatures over land have continued apace throughout this time period.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Media, outreach and editorial response<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, there are some commentaries that look at the impact these questions have had on the wider public discussion: <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-8\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-8\">Hawkins et al<\/a><\/span> (OA, including Twitter stalwarts <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/flimsin\">Tamsin Edwards<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dougmcneall\">Doug McNeall<\/a>) discuss the opportunities that interest in recent trends gives scientists to discuss science on social media (also blogged about <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.plos.org\/models\/pause-for-thought\/\">here<\/a>), while <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-9\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-9\">Max Boykoff<\/a><\/span> (OA) focuses on the framing of the issue in traditional media. Both <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-10\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-10\">Nature Clim. Chg.<\/a><\/span> (OA) and <span id=\"cite_ITEM-16935-6\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-16935-6\">Nature Geoscience<\/a><\/span> (OA) have interesting editorials.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this is a great set of overviews of the issues &#8211; observations, comparisons, and modelling &#8211; and leads to some very specific directions for future research.
