{"id":19805,"date":"2016-12-12T06:39:13","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T11:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/?p=19805"},"modified":"2016-12-12T06:39:13","modified_gmt":"2016-12-12T11:39:13","slug":"agu-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2016\/12\/agu-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"AGU 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kcite-section\" kcite-section-id=\"19805\">\n<p>It&#8217;s that time of year again. <a href=\"https:\/\/fallmeeting.agu.org\/2016\/\">Fall AGU<\/a> is the biggest gathering of geophysical scientists in the world (~24,000 attendees) and while it includes planetary science, seismology and magnetophysics, it is swamped by earth scientists, whose work covers the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, climate, natural hazards and paleoclimate.<\/p>\n<p>As in previous years, many sessions and most of the keynotes will be available <a href=\"http:\/\/fallmeeting.agu.org\/2016\/virtual-options\/\">On-Demand<\/a> (which is free but you do need to register) and there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Index\/EPoster~1\">E-poster facility<\/a> that lets non-attendees view some of the posters.<\/p>\n<p>Some interesting sessions related to discussions at RealClimate will be the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/12548\">Betting on Climate Change<\/a>&#8221; (Mon, posters), &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/13412\">El Ni\u00f1o: Global Anomalies and Societal Impacts at Regional Scale<\/a>&#8221; (Wed, Union Channel On-demand), and <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/13343\">&#8220;The Up\u2010Goer Five Challenge: A Fun and Radical Way to Distill Your Science&#8221;<\/a> (Fri). Of course, there are always the usual paleo-climate (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/17402\">Climate of the Common Era<\/a>), model evaluation, and observational sessions to follow.<\/p>\n<p>Keynotes from <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/119857\">Isaac Held,<\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/14135\">Christine Hulbe,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Paper\/124142\">Nathalie Cabrol<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/14077\">Daniel Jacob <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/agu.confex.com\/agu\/fm16\/meetingapp.cgi\/Session\/14063\">Bette Otto-Bleisner<\/a> all sound promising, covering tropical cyclones, the last glacial maximum, the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, air quality and astrobiology (though probably not all at once).<\/p>\n<p>If there are any other specific sessions or talks, you&#8217;d like to advertise or comment on, put them in the comments.
