{"id":22403,"date":"2019-04-14T10:44:26","date_gmt":"2019-04-14T15:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/?p=22403"},"modified":"2019-04-14T13:08:31","modified_gmt":"2019-04-14T18:08:31","slug":"nenana-ice-classic-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2019\/04\/nenana-ice-classic-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Nenana Ice Classic 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kcite-section\" kcite-section-id=\"22403\">\n<p>Wow.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps unsurprisingly given the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/04\/09\/climate\/alaska-abnormally-hot-march.html?smid=tw-share\">exceptional (relative) warmth<\/a> in Alaska last month and in February, the record for the <a href=\"http:\/\/nenanaakiceclassic.com\/\">Nenana Ice Classic<\/a> was shattered this year.<\/p>\n<p>The previous official record was associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1256\/wea.248.04\">exceptional conditions<\/a> in El Ni\u00f1o-affected winter of 1939-1940, when the ice went out on April 20th 1940. Though since 1940 was a leap year, that was actually a little later (relative to the vernal equinox) than the ice out date in 1998 (which wasn&#8217;t a leap year).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other records are also tumbling in the region, for instance the ice out data at Bethel, Alaska:<\/p>\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Kuskokwim River at Bethel has gone out. This is, by far, the earliest breakup in the 90+ years of breakup data.
