{"id":23273,"date":"2020-11-29T04:52:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-29T09:52:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/?p=23273"},"modified":"2020-11-29T09:12:14","modified_gmt":"2020-11-29T14:12:14","slug":"thinking-small-and-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2020\/11\/thinking-small-and-big\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking, small and big"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kcite-section\" kcite-section-id=\"23273\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The point that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordre.com\/climatescience\/view\/10.1093\/acrefore\/9780190228620.001.0001\/acrefore-9780190228620-e-27\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; font-style: italic; text-decoration-line: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">climate downscaling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> must pay attention to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">the law of small numbers<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> is no joke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) will <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; text-decoration-line: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcrp-climate.org\/news\/wcrp-newsletter\/wcrp-news-articles\/1626-new-wcrp-2021\">become a &#8216;new&#8217; WCRP with a \u201csoft launch\u201d<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> in 2021. This is quite a big story since it coordinates much of the research and the substance on which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) builds. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Until now, the COordinated Regional Downscaling EXperiment (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cordex.org\/\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; text-decoration-line: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">CORDEX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">) has been a major project sponsored by the WRCP. CORDEX has involved regional modelling and downscaling with a focus on the models and methods rather than providing climate services. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">In its new form, the activities that used to be carried out within CORDEX will belong to the WCRP community called \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Regional information for society<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">\u2019 (RifS). This implies a slight shift in emphasis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">With this change, the WCRP signals a desire for the regional modelling results to become more useful and relevant for decision-makers. The change will also introduce a set of new requirements, and hence the law of small numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">The law of small numbers is described in Daniel Kahneman\u2019s book &#8216;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Thinking-Fast-Slow-Daniel-Kahneman\/dp\/0374533555\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; text-decoration-line: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Thinking, fast and slow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&#8216; and is a condition that can be explained by statistical theory. It says that you are likely to draw a misleading conclusion if your sample is small. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">I\u2019m no statistician, but a physicist who experienced a \u201cstatistical revelation\u201d about a decade ago. Physics-based disciplines, such as meteorology, often approach a problem from a different angle to the statisticians, and there are often some gaps in the understanding and appreciation between the two communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">A physicist would say that if we know one side of an equation, then we also know the other side. The statistician, on the other hand, would use data to prove there is an equation in the first place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">One of the key pillars of statistics is that we have a random sample that represents what we want to study. We have no such statistical samples for future climate outlooks, but we do have ensembles of simulations representing future projections. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">We also have to keep in mind that regional climate behaves differently to global climate. There are pronounced stochastic variations on regional and decadal scales that may swamp the long-term trends due to greenhouse gases <span id=\"cite_ITEM-23273-0\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-23273-0\">(Deser et al., 2012)<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Roboto; color: #222222; background-color: #ffffff; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">These variations are subdued on a global scale since opposite variations over different regions tend to cancel each other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;\">CORDEX has in the past produced ensembles that can be considered as small, and <span id=\"cite_ITEM-23273-1\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-23273-1\">Mezghani et al., (2019)<\/a><\/span> demonstrated that the Euro-CORDEX ensemble is affected by the law of small numbers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt; white-space: pre-wrap;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even if you have a perfect global climate model and perfect downscaling, you risk getting misleading results with a small ensemble, thanks to the law of small numbers. The regional variations are non-deterministic due to the chaotic nature of the atmospheric circulation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">My take-home-message is that there is a need for sufficiently large ensembles of downscaled results. Furthermore, it is the number of different simulations with <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">global climate models<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> that is key since they provide boundary conditions for the downscaling. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Hence, there is a need for a strong and continued coordination between the downscaling groups so that more scientists contribute to building such ensembles. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">Also, while CORDEX has been strong on regional climate modelling, the new RifS community needs additional new expertise. Perhaps a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nclimate\/journal\/v7\/n10\/full\/nclimate3393.html\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; text-decoration-line: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">stronger presence of statisticians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\"> is a good thing. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">And while the downscaled results from large ensembles can provide a basis for a risk analysis, there is also another way to provide regional information for society: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2019EO113311\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #1155cc; text-decoration-line: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">stress-testing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n<h2>References<\/h2>\n    <ol>\n    <li><a name='ITEM-23273-0'><\/a>\nC.
