{"id":23854,"date":"2021-08-09T03:06:34","date_gmt":"2021-08-09T08:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/?p=23854"},"modified":"2021-08-09T03:06:37","modified_gmt":"2021-08-09T08:06:37","slug":"a-tale-of-two-hockey-sticks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2021\/08\/a-tale-of-two-hockey-sticks\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tale of Two Hockey Sticks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kcite-section\" kcite-section-id=\"23854\">\n\n<p>Two decades ago, the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/observations\/earth-day-and-the-hockey-stick-a-singular-message\/\" title=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/observations\/earth-day-and-the-hockey-stick-a-singular-message\/\">\u201cHockey Stick\u201d curve<\/a>, published in 1999 by me and my co-authors <span id=\"cite_ITEM-23854-0\" name=\"citation\"><a href=\"#ITEM-23854-0\">(Mann, Bradley and Hughes, 1999)<\/a><\/span>, was featured in the all-important \u201cSummary for Policy Makers\u201d (SPM) of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar3\/wg1\/\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar3\/wg1\/\">2001 IPCC Third Assessment report<\/a>. The curve, which depicted temperature variations over the past 1000 years estimated from \u201cproxy data such as tree rings, corals, ice cores, and lake sediments\u201d, showed the upward spiking of modern temperatures (the \u201cblade\u201d) as it dramatically ascends, during the industrial era, upward from the \u201chandle\u201d that describes the modest, slightly downward steady trend that preceded it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hockey Stick became an icon in the case for human-caused climate change, and I found myself at the center of the contentious climate debate (I\u2019ve described my experiences in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/michaelmann.net\/books\/hockey-stick\" title=\"https:\/\/michaelmann.net\/books\/hockey-stick\">The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Featured two decades later now in the AR6 SPM is a <em>longer<\/em> Hockey Stick with an even <em>sharper<\/em> blade. And no longer just for the Northern Hemisphere, it now covers the whole globe. Temperatures during the most recent decade (2011\u20132020) exceed those of the most recent multi-century warm period, around 6500 years ago13 [0.2\u00b0C to 1\u00b0C relative to 1850\u2013 1900] (<em>medium confidence<\/em>).
