{"id":331,"date":"2006-07-28T14:41:45","date_gmt":"2006-07-28T18:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=331"},"modified":"2007-08-01T13:47:56","modified_gmt":"2007-08-01T18:47:56","slug":"peter-doran-and-how-misleading-talking-points-propagate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2006\/07\/peter-doran-and-how-misleading-talking-points-propagate\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Doran and how misleading talking points propagate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kcite-section\" kcite-section-id=\"331\">\n<p>Peter Doran, the lead author on a oft-cited, but less-often read, Nature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/cgi-taf\/DynaPage.taf?file=\/nature\/journal\/v415\/n6871\/abs\/nature710_fs.html\">study on Antarctic climate in 2002<\/a> had an Op-Ed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/07\/27\/opinion\/27doran.html?_r=1&#038;oref=slogin\">NY Times today<\/a> decrying the misuse of his team&#8217;s results in the on-going climate science &#8216;debate&#8217;.  As we discussed a while back (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2004\/12\/antarctic-cooling-global-warming\/\">Antarctic cooling, global warming?<\/a>), there is a lot of interesting stuff going on in Antarctica: the complexities of different forcings (ozone in particular), the importance of <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.giss.nasa.gov\/abstracts\/2004\/ShindellSchmidt1.html\">dynamical<\/a> as well as radiative processes, and the difficulties of dealing with very inhomogeneous and insufficiently long data series. But like so many results in this field, it has become a politicized &#8216;talking point&#8217;, shorn of its context, that is mis-quoted and mis-used by many who should (and often do) know better. Doran <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onthemedia.org\/transcripts\/transcripts_021602_science.html\">complained<\/a> about the media coverage of his paper at the time, and with the passage of time, the  distortion has predictably increased.
