{"id":6371,"date":"2011-01-28T09:05:51","date_gmt":"2011-01-28T14:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/?p=6371"},"modified":"2011-01-28T13:22:19","modified_gmt":"2011-01-28T18:22:19","slug":"friday-round-up-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2011\/01\/friday-round-up-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Friday round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kcite-section\" kcite-section-id=\"6371\">\n<p>A few items of interest this week.<\/p>\n<p><b>Paleoclimate:<\/b><br \/>\n1. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/331\/6016\/450.short\">A new study<\/a> by Spielhagen and co-authors in <em>Science<\/em> reconstructs temperatures of North Atlantic source waters to the Arctic for the past two millennia, adding another very long-handled <a href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2011\/01\/27\/science-temperatures-atlantic-water-arctic-unprecedented-2000-years-linked-to-arctic-amplification-of-global-warming\/\">Hockey Stick<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2008\/09\/progress-in-millennial-reconstructions\/\">ever-growing<\/a> league.  <\/p>\n<p>2. From last week, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/early\/2011\/01\/12\/science.1197175.abstract\">an article<\/a> in <em>Science Express<\/em> by Buntgen <em>et al<\/em> reconstructing European summer temperature for the past 2500 years, finding that recent warming is unprecedented over that time frame, and providing some historical insights into the societal challenges posed by climate instability (listen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/01\/22\/133143758\/could-climate-change-have-led-to-the-fall-of-rome\">here<\/a> for an interview with mike about the study on NPR&#8217;s <em>All Things Considered<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>3. The team of ice core researchers at WAIS Divide <a href=\"http:\/\/waisdivide.unh.edu\/news\/index.shtml#201\">reaches its goal<\/a> of 3300 meters of ice.  [WAIS Divide, central West Antarctica, is a site of significant warming in Antarctica, over at least the last 50 years, a result recently confirmed by the study of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclimate.org\/index.php\/archives\/2010\/12\/a-brief-history-of-knowledge-about-antarctic-temperatures\/\"'>O&#8217;Donnell et al. (2010)<\/a>; Stay tuned for more on the that soon].<\/p>\n<p><b>Other Miscellaneous Items:<\/b><br \/>\n1.
